Chris Cefole_Exercise1

I designed these three layouts in a way that made sense to me with the given grid structures. I chose to keep certain elements in each layout consistent by using horizontal lines. My target audience would be 20-25 years of age and well educated. I say that because I purposely left certain blocks of text because I knew my target audience would be able to read through the text without losing their attention or feel overwhelmed. The colors I chose were very picture oriented because I wanted each page to have unity.

While designing with these different grid types, a certain target audience should be considered in mind. For these three examples of department pages from the Habitat Magazine, my goal was to reach out to teens who like to read in order for them to gain factual knowledge. The age range lies between 15-19 years so I tried to use colors that would create interest without being too childish. I stayed within the structures of the grids, but I'm still currently teeter-tottering on how to handle the textual content on the pages. With that said, I'd appreciate any feedback from the class in order to help me pull this in the right direction!

Exercise 1 - Revised!

Sorry for not realizing I was not doing departments earlier, I revised my exercise using the correct content!

Also after looking at the feedback I got for the first one I posted, I tried adjusting things a little, and changing my target audience. Since I absolutely want to use a lot of color in my magazine, I decided I am shifting my target audience to high school kids. Any grade under high school seems too young for the reading, and I feel like high school students would like to learn this information. College students could be interested, I'm a little on the fence on who would be more suited still..

I changed around the font for the body copy of the page like suggested, and I think it makes the reading more legible. Body copy in black is always easier to read, but I feel like now that I toned down the colors, it does not cause any readability problems and really compliments the images I chose.

Thank you!

I adapted my design to each template as according. I used powerful photography and visually interesting headlines  to pull the reader in. My target audience is in the early 20 to mid 20's. Modern feel was my intent, I branched out a little to a more traditional feel for the second design. I went really out of my comfort zone with the 3rd and had a bit of fun with it.

With my layouts, I kept the idea of people my age and older who live active and fast paced lifestyles in mind. Those who gravitate towards anything colorful and seemingly helpful in our quest to be as healthy as we all possibly can. I kept the body text typeface the same throughout because it is a neutral and simplistic typeface, Source Sans, and I didn't want that to detract from any design elements. The headlines for all three layouts and different, to give a slightly different feel. I wanted to play around to see what styles may or may not work moving forward. Thanks!

My target audience, I haven’t 100 percent decided but I’m thinking more along the lines of younger working professionals who are into fitness and healthy lifestyle as well as foodies and younger chefs. Mostly people living in urban areas who are not opposed to stopping in the local gourmet grocery store or organic food stand to grab some food to cook for dinner. My 3 layouts are rough mockups of three styles and different elements so that I can figure out which direction to go to. I haven’t totally also decided which typefaces and spacing I like but I wanted to try a variety of things to then narrow down.

My designs are clean and simplistict.  My target audience is that of a more senior readership, say ages 40 to 60.  Colors used are primary, i.e., Red, Green, and Blue.  Imagery is used to help fill the page(s) and attract the viewers attention.  Typeface is sans serif to keep readability to a maximum.
