Nazar Exercise 1

With my layouts, I kept the idea of people my age and older who live active and fast paced lifestyles in mind. Those who gravitate towards anything colorful and seemingly helpful in our quest to be as healthy as we all possibly can. I kept the body text typeface the same throughout because it is a neutral and simplistic typeface, Source Sans, and I didn't want that to detract from any design elements. The headlines for all three layouts and different, to give a slightly different feel. I wanted to play around to see what styles may or may not work moving forward. Thanks!

  1. So I love the second layout, the type isn't my favorite but I know your great with typography so you'll play around with it, but I think it's too heavy, but the layout I love. I really like the way you've created the title of the article it's fun and playful but also something easily could be found in a magazine. The 3-column breakdown works well for the content but the way you have images broken up takes away from all the content to make it easy to look at. I also like 3 and 1, very different but they work well aswell. I think 3 would work well for you aswell but dropping your text frames down a little from your image to create a little negative space! Can't wait to see what your gonna do with this one!

  3. Dan – I love the icon as well, and helps us see these are reoccurring Department articles. I would look forward to seeing you create a family of these little icons for different departments. Before further feedback, please note that the heading is actually “The Future of Farms”. The Future of Foods is the magazine title – to be used on the cover and in running heads/feet only. #1 – love the almost info-graphic quality of the layout. But… I’m not sure what to read first? You will need to help the reader either move down to start – or head up to top right. A drop cap, or color contrast, or size change should address that. #2 has a lovely feel – but I encourage you to solve the picture/text relationship issue here. I don’t quite understand the lower left skinny stacked photos… what are they? Where to they belong? I understand that they balance the page well down there, but they don’t add content like they could. They “show” us what the items look like… which is important but only meaningful if we know what is what. #3 – do you need that whole return between paragraphs? Is it breaking this up a bit? I enjoy the typography of the heading but think you need to allow hyphenation in the body copy (maybe in all the layouts… your ragged right edges are too ragged) or reduce the pt size. That’s it – great start.

  4. Dan,
First let me say the robot icon is adorable and the color coding for different departments was a smart decision. I enjoy these layouts and they all seem consistent and look like they belong in the same magazine.

    Great Work!
