Rob Stewart Exercise 1

Hey class,
So here are my exercise examples for this week. I have decided that my audience for my habitat magazine will be young professionals (25-30) who have an invested interest in the environment and their overall well being. My audience is also an educated group, who make a comfortable living for themselves. With my Habitat magazine I want it to have a contemporary feel with a good use of white space, dynamic imagery, and a occasional pop of color.

Looking forward to any and all feedback!

  1. I absolutely love the placement of your images in all three layouts! The burst of color used for the type in the first layout is very attention-grabbing and works well without effecting legibility. The look and feel is very fun, engaging, and overall positive. It really makes me want to read the body copy. If i had to choose a favorite, I would have to say the intentional use of white space, alignment of type and images, and color palette work best in the third layout.

  3. Rob, all your layouts work well together and read as one. I like al the shapes you played with in the different layouts and your geometric letterforms add the air of futuristic topics and modern style. I like the grid in the last layout as the image continues into the title, looks great.

  4. Rob, thank you for using the correct text! Now the question is “What is the difference between Feature articles and Department articles?” We will discuss this in class tomorrow, and I think you’ll realize that your first 2 layouts could be mistaken for Feature articles. Why is that? Take a look at the difference between the 2 sections, and return to this knowing that some adjustments/additional elements could make these strong layouts into Department pages. The clever “image into type” heading you have on layout 3 is great and works really well. It’s clever – and this audience of educated, successful young people will be looking for something along those lines.

  5. Rob, I really like 1 and 3 for layouts. I think the way you have it spaced out in your 4 column grid system (the images) works really well here. I have to say my favorite is number 1. The way you have the context that isn't a definition of a word separated by a color looks great. I also like how you made the article still feel like magazine text but also like fact sheet but not boring. The image placement for your layouts is done really well. Your white space usage works really well in number three which is great because for your target audience this would be really appealing, can't wait to see what you do!

  6. Hey Rob,

I really like the second and third layouts. I think the last is my favorite though. The use of negative space, paired with a legible body copy makes for a very appealing piece. I also like the color palette you chose for the third layout, it really drives the unity of the piece home. The only critique I would have would be on the row division. I feel like it is missing something in the middle column to break up all of the text so that it isn't just a straight column of text. Can't wait to see the progression!

    Best,

    Chris
