Naidin Ticas_Exercise 1

Hello Class!
I am still on the fence and deciding what my Audience will be. My initial idea was students in high school. More geared towards the 11-12th grade, because after reading the content I think it would be very important for them to be mindful of what they are eating/consuming and to be knowledgeable about farms/crops in other places around the world and how this affects them, because I think most teenagers probably don't care or think much of it. So I played around with that in mind and making the headlines fun, and eye-catching, edgy, yet still keeping a serious tone. For the first grid I went with a playful look, using colors and imagery and typeface that add a youthful look with the decorative serifs. Then I got a little more serious on Grid B with Bold strong typefaces. Then again in Grid C I got whimsical using a geometric typeface, that also has a sans rounded version as well.

  1. I love what you have done with the type especially with your target audience being students in high school... I think they can especially benefit from this because it may spark interest in their school cafeteria food...

My critiques would be 1: in the 2 column grid the photo feels a little too tight with the text..
and 2: the 2nd title i think you should move "The Next Green" down closer to the Revolution.

I love the overall look and feel!!

    1. Thank you Chelsey! I do agree. I had a lot of trouble with the second one and finding a good way of placing the title for "The Next Green." So I will try playing some more with that.

And I also think the photos are tight as well. I think maybe finding other photographs could work better.

  2. Nadine – I agree with Chelsey - this is an audience that could really want this info.

I enjoy the layouts, although you have used the Feature text rather than the Department articles text. So I’m going to give you feedback on these as "Features"… and next exercise you ought to step back and do this again with the Department text (see other posts, and find this text at the beginning in your manuscript).

Audience - if you are designing for teens I’m not sure these hold enough elements for that age range. The pages may need to be busier, more fun, and engaging. Consider breaking out the “rectangle” groove and use some silhouettes of quirky, humorous teens. I think this is a great challenge for you – and will force you to be bold, use exciting images, and crop them/bleed them/ and play with your page edges. Why don’t you do some more research to find some other mags aimed at this age group. Try this link:

Layout 1 – Heading: think about emphasizing the words “Habits” too because then we’ll read “Eating Habits Change” which makes more sense than “Eating Change". Can you consider finding pix of teens eating big burgers, in somewhat exaggerated poses? Humor talks well to this audience.

Layout 2 – The staggered photos are great, and typography contrasting fonts work. Think BIGGER… isn’t revolution a big idea? Tall and big… don’t be afraid to cut up the space with huge, clever typography. CLEVER is the operative word for this audience. Backgrounds can be white… or….

Layout 3 – Love the crazy heading type and can see that you repeat its use in the column quote. But it seems to loose impact at such a small size. Either enlarge that word (and invade the column of type with it) or replace it with that sans serif. You could play with bold/light font in that column quote.

Can you find a photo to sit above the Bhead and maybe bleeds off to right? Is your type a bit too big for this column width?

Great start… now get inventive, creative, and a bit crazy!

    1. Not sure what you mean Coni about the Feature texts? Because I got the copy straight from the file you gave us in class.

But I agree with all the suggestions. I will take your suggestions and take it further and do more research of teens and magazine. The links you sent me help a lot! I really like the idea of adding humor as well to the layout.

I think I didn't go crazy quite yet, because I wanted to follow the grid. But now I see opportunity to try new things and really challenge myself to speak to this audience.

  3. Nadine - can't resist giving you this link too. Check out the really creative black&white/color effects of this cover magazine "Just Be". What would the interior pages of this magazine look like?

  4. Nadine,

My favorite is the third layout. It looks very contemporary especially the typeface you used over the image. I also really like the quote and the line treatment you used along with the white space allowing it to breathe.

My one critic for that layout would be the word "Lifestyle" in the quote I don't know if that typeface necessarily works in that situation or size. Overall great work!

    1. Thanks Rob!
And yes and you and Coni have pointed it out, I agree too. But I think I might try what Coni has suggested and maybe going bigger and have the quote maybe go into the body text and play around with placement.

  5. Your choice of typefaces is so on point! Love it! I would say the first layout is the most successful and the reason is is that I literally can't find one thing I would add or subtract to it. Beautifully designed!

    1. Thank you Brittany. I felt a little on the fence with the typefaces, but your comment makes me feel much more confident. :)

  6. I love the typography choices. I like the idea of high school students and with that your first layout works really well. It's content heavy but in a playful way so you don't feel like your looking at an overwhelming amount of info. I also love what you have done with number 2. The type and almost like upside down gradual change, of length looks cool and plays well into the design. One thing I would add though is a running header or footer with the magazine name and page numbers, I can't wait to see what you do with this!
