Savard Exercise 1

  1. Erica – I believe you have mixed up the Department text and Feature text. This exercise is about designing a Department… not a Feature. Look at the manuscript I gave you in hard copy, and you can see which text is for which sections. There are 3 articles to choose from, and there should be more than one article on the page. Instead, I’m seeing what I would consider Feature article designs. Which are quite nice – but to give you meaningful feedback I will need to know your target audience. Can you follow this post with a comment that explains who you are talking to? Then… next exercise you’ll need to return to this and create some Department layouts. Please give me some more info, and I’ll give you feedback on these Feature layouts.

  2. My target audience will be for young adults, in their 20's and 30's, who want to learn about and focus on a healthy lifestyle.

  3. The placement of the images within the text is extremely clever and gives the grid structure a whimsical feel that makes it more engaging to read. My only suggestion would be to work on the leading of the body copy to make it easier to read. Also, I'm obsessed with all the typefaces you used!

  4. Ok, young adults it is. Which means it is time to think about contemporary color palettes and bold, clear designs. We are going to talk this week about the connection between content and images… and I encourage you to rethink some of the images you are using. Is the “New Face of Hunger” really about bountiful piles of food, and a peeled banana ready to eat (although it does look a bit past its ripeness). The pix I see for How our Eating Habits will Change makes more sense – and I especially think the “spilled” basket of fresh veggies works well at the bottom of the page. “The Future of Farms” is a good looking Department article layout – a few additional elements like a navigational aid by way of a small icon that could read “What’s NOW” or “Trending In” would help us. Running feet/running head and a consistent color for the Bheads would finish this off. Please decide to work with only Features or Departments for next week (where your printed work will be due). OK?

  5. All of the titles look really nice, and the typefaces used are suitable for the subject matter. For instance, if the font you used in the word "Hunger" for the first one was the same as the other two then it would not have the same impact. The way your text wraps around images create an interest, but other than that, the text filling the columns are really basic besides a few subheads. I do like the placement of the pull quote in the first one, so if there were more elements like that applied, then I think the design could be more successful! Keep it up, and good luck!
