David Perricone Assignment 1

I adapted my design to each template as according. I used powerful photography and visually interesting headlines  to pull the reader in. My target audience is in the early 20 to mid 20's. Modern feel was my intent, I branched out a little to a more traditional feel for the second design. I went really out of my comfort zone with the 3rd and had a bit of fun with it.

  1. All have very different takes, and I think B and C go more towards your target audience than A. The layout for C is really interesting, you get drawn in by the large logo, go down to the blue box, then to The Future of Farms, and then to the actual content, which is a great show of hierarchy! I'd suggest changing the typeface for C if you go forward with it, since it seems a little too light and may cause readability issues.

B is wonderful, the pictures push you toward the content of the page really well and the typeface choices compliment the pictures.

    Great job!

  2. David – I actually thought the type at the top of #1 was in Russian. Really!! So – maybe instead of reversing the line, you can put “The Future” at top, and “Of Farms” at bottom. Sandwiching the photo is a good idea. I recommend you rethink the whole return between paragraphs, adding some extra space is fine, but maybe you don’t need all that much space… and it will eliminate the long fingers of negative space that seems to divide up your page (and will probably get rid of the orphans at top of right column). Your top photo so SO exciting, with huge hands reaching towards us. Your bottom photo doesn’t seem to continue this approach. Rethink? #2 layout should contain smaller subheadings, and probably stronger photos, in less predictable shapes (moving across all columns top and bottom). #3 layout has some great neg space, and already an area for the department title (to replace “The Future of Foods”) This may be out of your comfort zone, but I encourage you to think about this layout, but with the boldness of #1. Good beginning!

  3. Layout 1 - The large image on top really grabs a person's attention! Other elements on the page also give a bold approach such as your use of vertical bars on each side, but I think the title as well as the second image need to be revised to make this one stronger. There is also widow text on the top of the second column that you don't want floating there so fixing that is also very important to note.

Layout 2 - The subheads do a great job making the piece readable, but I agree with Coni that it should be smaller because it makes the article's title indistinguishable from those sections. The image on top looks like it could be stronger if it was used more in the design. Perhaps if you could use that, or find another photo that allows text to be readable in front of it after slightly lowering it's opacity.

Layout 3 - I think this one is my personal favorite of the bunch because it has a nice layout which uses it's white space very appropriately for this kind of magazine. Definitely consider making this one a bit bolder. Not too much though because the colors and photo currently used are very easy on the eye!

    Good work!

  4. First Layout- I like the mirror text but I would lower the opacity a little so the eye is drawn first to line that is readable. I think you could chose a different picture for the bottom, I understand the relevance because the article is talking about how farms are changing, but because it is the last thing seen on the page it makes me think that that image is what farming is moving toward, when in reality that is where farming has come from. I would change the spacing between paragraphs so that "stroying pests" stays in the first column. I like the emphasis on the S but maybe try it is a drop cap?

I like the layout of the images and text in the second one. I would consider justifying the type for all three columns since the lines aren't too ragged. I think it would create very clean lines since there is a good amount of white space. I think I would also consider bringing Future Frontiers down so it will line up with the top of the other columns. Lastly, although I love the images themselves, I don't know how appropriate they are for the article since a lot of it is talking about tech and labs and skycraping farms.

As for the third one, I agree with Tyler, I love the colors on the page, especially the muted background. The type is a little hard to read but it might just be on my screen, maybe increase the tracking a little or make the headline a little bolder (but not too much). I think this is my favorite layout because of the white space.
