  1. So if I had to guess your audience I would probably guess for adults, women to be more specific. I would say this due to the softness of the colors throughout each grid. They feel very pastel and almost muted. Which I really like!

The only thing I will say is you have two widows on the second grid, one under the headline "We might see ads for broccoli." And the last paragraph on the bottom towards the right.

The best grid working for me in my option is the last one, because I like leading line you have added to direct the eye. The image also brings a warm to the page. Everything here feels right! Good job!

  2. Chelsey – Some thoughts: Departments are different than Features, and it’s important to recognize the difference between them. Departments often have more than 1 article on a page, usually have smaller but more photos, and often have an icon or type treatment that tells us that this is a reoccurring section of the magazine… each month.
Your first layout could be mistaken for a Feature, can you see this?
Your second layout is starting to look like a department because of having 2 articles… although each could benefit by having its own photo or at least more than 1 photo on the page. The type is hard to read on top of the photo - is there another way to use that photo? Do we need to see it all? What if you cropped it vertically to sit in the far right column (bleeding or not – up to you) and cut some of the type? Is there a small icon/type that could serve as a department title… it’s up to you to write it. It could be something like “News” or “Current Thinking”… look at some magazines for ideas.
Your third layout holds a lovely photo, and I agree with Nadine that this might be showing us your intended audience. Good. Although there is only 1 article here, because of the 4 columns… it is recognizable as a Department. Your body copy is too large for this 4 column grid. Do you remember the equation I gave you in class? It could help you figure out the type size for this column measure. Another rule of thumb is to think about having between 6-9 words per line for good readability.
    Nice beginning.

  3. Hey Chelsey,

I think that you have a couple different target audiences that would go with your spreads. That being said, I think that your last one is designed very well. I think that the picture leads into the title perfectly. The only negative that I see would be the block text at the end of the last column. I am not sure if that was intentional or not but it doesn't flow as nicely as the rest of the body copy. Other than that I think the last layout is perfect as far as negative space, use of image, and overall layout goes.

    Best,

    Chris
