Habitat Magazine will speak to teen
girls in high school, grades 11-12. These girls are far in their education and
preparing for college soon, and due to
research, teen girl readers want the content in their magazines to reflect
their lives, and they rely on magazines as a sounding board. Therefore, Habitat
Magazine strives to be playful, young and educational, through the use of
bright imagery, hierarchy, and engaging color, in order to help the teen girls
learn about the world they live in.
The concept to “talk” to this audience is by talking their lingo. For example, by the usage of Hashtags, insightful taglines, and adding imagery/colors to keep it upbeat and lively. This will allow the readers to relate to the content and become inspired and tell their friends and family about everything they have learned about the Future of Food.
The inspiration and drive for the design decisions were influenced by Habitat Magazine’s competition: Seventeen Magazine, GL Girl’s Life and #JustBe. Seventeen Magazine covers the issues that matter to teenage girls. Offering a wide-variety of content, from quizzes and romance advice, to beauty tips and fashion. GL Girl’s Life Magazine focuses on the issues and topics important to girls over ten years of age. #Justbe is a trendy and interactive magazine for teens and young adults. It is about art, sports, fashion, sexual health, social media, and much more.
Habitat Magazine will provide its audience a clean, but fun and youthful message. Most of the typefaces are clean and modern to create interest and increase readability. But will also include bold, fun, and playful typefaces to keep the magazine young and hip. (see figure below) The imagery and colors are energetic and bright to bring in the readers, but also contains serious and muted colors for the deeper content to get the message across. The magazine contains one Advertisement relating to fashion to maintain the overall youthful look.
