Perricone Exercise 2

For Exercise 2 I decided to do 3 different spreads for the same article. I was experimenting with the the color in the imagery I used vs the color used in headlines and sub-headlines. I was attempting to create visual interest playing off of the different types of green and implementing them in different areas of my spreads. I'm wondering which style is the most interesting to you all, and what I should change to create a more organized spread. Any feedback is appreciated as I am submitting this late (my apologies). Thanks for taking a look!

  1. David – I’ll give you some of my thoughts, and I hope others will do the same. Before I write about the individual layouts, I’ve just noticed that your last layout does not contain the correct content – you have used the body copy from another article. Your intention was to create 3 different layouts for the same article (which was, in fact, the instructions). Did you not notice the different text? Also – please know that page #s are always even on the left, and odd on the right. Check it out, look in any book and you’ll see this. Do you know why?

Layout 1 – I see a very strong abstract approach on the left page that establishes a relationship between the heading and the image. I see the beginning of something very interesting, as that small, sharp angle of white space sits between the wide green behind heading and the image below it. Can this be repeated? How? Where?. I encourage you to continue to work at this with additional shapes – possibly moving across the spread under the large green shape that holds the heading. There seems to be a very large amount of negative space in that area, maybe too large? What else can happen in all the negative space? The next thing to think about is the column quote that you have selected. I’m not sure it captures the ideas in the article. I wonder if something like “There are 2 competing visions… one is high tech, with a heavy emphasis on breeding better crops… the second is a very different approach…”. Your job is to entice the reader, give them a reason to want to read this article. Images – I encourage you to find additional image(s) for this spread and the following page(s) as well. I’m not sure who your audience is – please remember to remind us of who you are speaking to with your designs. Make sure the images enhance the text – they need to work together to visually express the subject matter.

Layout 2 – The largest challenge you have here, in my opinion, is the lack of unity between the pages. I don’t see a continuation of an article from left to right… and I see a repeated heading (Revolution) at far right… which adds “confusion” to the mix. What is the concept here? Do the images support the text? I’m not sure they do. Is this article about apples? Or, simply about the color green? Neither, right? In fact, the crops are NOT green in the story as it starts. Please read this article more closely, and identify particular areas that could be made “visual” – like a farmer from the area of Tanzania (where is that? Look it up). What does a cassava plant look like? Why not consider showing scientists out in the field? Lots of options – but you need to understand the article. This feels a bit like you are jumping on the first concept you come to (the word GREEN in the title) and running with it… it just isn’t enough of a deep concept for this to give you options that make sense. The layout itself has “holes” of negative space – rather than negative space that has a purpose to lead our eyes, or separate elements, or enclose elements that need to be read together. Design the shapes on the page while thinking about a jigsaw puzzle. Each element must “fit” with the surrounding elements, and allow the negative space to flow between. It’s a challenge, but that’s exactly what composing a design is all about. Don’t forget what you learned in your Fundamentals of Design class.

Layout 3 – This is the layout that holds the wrong body copy. And the image itself makes no sense with either article. We discussed the connection between text and image during last class. Because you have missed 2 classes, and all the discussions, you absolutely need do read the text book and catch up. Please look at the other designs posted last week for this assignment to better understand what the results of the exercises should be. (You should do the same for Exercise 1 as well.)
