Stewart EXERCISE 3 Masthead/Cover Design

Hello again bloggers!,

Audience Reminder
Age(s): 25-30
Income: Upper Middle Class
My audience also has an interest in the environment, they eat organic, shop for green products, etc.

Masthead
My concept for my masthead is to focus on the preposition "at" in the word "Habitat." So I have two designs for the masthead one with a more decorative typeface the other is a more plain one. Which do you guys like more?

Cover Design
I am truly looking forward to all critics this week because I think I need some help from you guys. I am leaning most towards the first one because I think the overall all design is the most true to my audience.

  1. Most favorite: I would have to agree with you that my first one is my favorite!! Just because it has the right amount of white space, which is what you were going for this audience. I also like the fact that it is very simplistic with just "The Future of Food" because it gives it like a mysterious look, and guides the reader to want to grab it and read what it's all about! Especially with the "/" leading the eye towards the title then can lead to turning the page. Good job!

Second cover: I do like this one as well but I don't think it's as strong as the first one. You want your cover to be different among others and this one feels too similar other food magazines out there, which is good but for your audience you want it to speak to them.

Third Cover: This would be the second runner up for me I think. I also like the use of simplicity in this one, and the thin typeface for Food to symbolize healthy eating , slimming down, and eating greens. However, I don't know if I love the two photos lowered in opacity. I think you can keep them in full color. Keep it colorful and eye catching. I also really like the element of the "+" maybe incorporate that element with the first one somehow? I don't thoughts class?

Can't wait to see what you do with this! Great job!

  2. Rob – I agree with Nadine’s comments concerning the 1st and 3rd layouts being more successful than layout 2. Probably because the image in both plays a more central role in the design – which, because of the subject matter, is pretty important. So, my comments will be limited to those 2:

Layout #1 – nice, really nice. Typography is youthful, colorful, and I see some shapes that we will recognize from UX design. The masthead is interesting. You will need to be able to express why the emphasis on “AT” is appropriate for this audience. I have my own theory, and look forward to hearing your’s in the Design Brief presentation. The image is big and bold and shows lovely veggies. Hmm… does this image fully represent the subject matter? I just had an idea… take it for what it’s worth… but I wonder if you could create a composite, and add other photo elements to this image? For instance – insects. To suggest we put “insects” in the category of “food” could be a provocative addition to the nice, pretty picture. Or, what else could be added, to enhance the photo and strengthen its representation of what we can expect inside? Creating “controversy” is a good approach for this audience.

Layout #3 – again, really nice. I also wonder (like Nadine) if the image is too ghosted. My thoughts about making a composite to add interest and meaning to the cover image, is the same for this one. I think you have room for 1 more cutline at bottom right. I enjoy the “Os” in FOOD, it pulls the eye to the center of the composition. Nice work on both – I’ll be interested to see which you choose to move forward with.

  3. I agree with Naidin and Coni, number one is successful! The "less is more" quality really helps grab the consumers curiosity and make them want to open it up to look what it's all about.

The plus signs in layout 2 and 3 are playful and a great way for leading the eye to the content, I agree with Naidin if you can figure out a way to incorporate that into the first layout it could give the layout a little more to look at.

  4. The top design reminds me of a tabbed feature where it says "December 2015" and I love it. But, I would love to see the "+ The Next Green Revolution" added to this layout to make it stronger. Also, I would suggest incorporating the green or yellow of the peppers somewhere, possibly in the text, to create a little more cohesiveness. This would have to my favorite cover of the three, but I also love the softness of the transparent images in the third.
