Brannelly Cover Rework

Hey guys! So during my design brief presentation I got mostly feedback on the design of my cover. It was suggested that I need to incorporate more color into the cover by adding a background behind the athlete. I tried a few different scenes: beach, gym, park, and forest. I also added the original with no background. Which background works the best and would target my audience best? Do you guys have any other ideas of potential background scenes that would work better? Again, my target audience is fitness enthusiasts ages 20 - 35. Lastly, the masks and cropping will be improved once I download the high res images, obvi :)

  1. Brittney,
I remember this was the most critique you got last week. Good job in creating different looks and experimenting.

For me the best one I think would be the Gym in 1st place and the park in second place.

The gym one speaks very well to your audience, and creates the atmosphere. It definitely give the vibe for the audience you are trying to communicate too. But I'm torn between the park too because its outside and in the environment, makes me feel like I can be there and workout as well. I like the red "Habitat" in the beach one a lot. Try adding that in the gym maybe.

    Overall nice work here!

  2. hey Brittany, so I liked your original cover with the gray background, but I am starting to like the habitat background. My favorite would be 3 (in the gym). I also think the red masthead works really well. It is similar in color schemes (the gym one) with grey and darker charcoal tones to your original idea of the gray silver background.

Number 5 and 2 are the least successful. It' hard to associate the full gym attire in the woods or the beach.

The red masthead, i really like, did you try and make the sports bra red? Could bring it up to a whole other level!

  4. My favorites are the first two (original and by the water) honestly, hope disagreeing with everyone isn't going to confuse you too much!

I personally don't like the red title, but maybe it's because it pulls me away from the image of her, which is so powerful. I think that's why I like the second one the most (if you were to change the title color) it adds a scene but doesn't take away from how powerful of an image you used,
    Cheers! good job!

  5. Britt- I agree with david, I like the water, but I also like the gym background. I think I thought I would like the original cover with her sports bra changed, but I find that the bar and cutlines seem separate from the title and the shorts and gloves (color v. bw). I think if you were to change everything to blue it would be more successful.
I like the subtleness of the second background and the way the wood panels direct the eye to the woman. I think the color is a bit distracting in the masthead but I like it for the little arrows.
If you go with the third I would remove the funny colored rug in the bottom right. I like how the white stands out against her hair and the background.
I don't care for the green backgrounds because she doesn't seem like she would be there. It looks like she just came from a boxing session because of the wrist wraps. She wouldn't be sparring with trees, so I don't find the backgrounds appropriate. That being said it seems like she could have stepped out of a hotel gym on the cape onto a dock to get fresh air in the water one.

  6. Hey Britt,

I still really like the first cover. I think anything in the back makes it too busy. I like the asymmetry and feel that the first one hits your target audience perfectly.

    Best,

  7. Brittany - I vote for the water because it is close to the original and doesn't "busy up" the background - but it does add more contextual information to the cover. Please be aware of the readability of The Future of Food - it seems to be breaking up and is less readable than I remember it (it could also be the low res jpeg).

I want to also say that once you have started this mono-chromatic approach on the cover, please keep that limited color palette in mind for the interior designs as well... otherwise the unity of the inside to outside will be compromised.
