Nazar Updates Week 9

Hi all -

Some updates, first my infographic that is part of a larger spread.

And second is a reworked spread that I hope is much more effective at not only capturing attention but more visually pleasing to the reader. I feel that it still conveys a somber mood while not being overly depressing as my previous versions have been.

Much more to see in class.

  1. Dan,
I really like the changes you have made. You have really taken this further! I like the blue color schemes you have here. The boy seems to have more life now, with color being added to the image, yet still sad with the blue filter.

The info-graphic is also very nice! Speaks to your audience. Very clever and well illustrated.

    Good work!

  2. Dan – your infograph is just great, although I’m wondering where you have it placed in the dummy layout? Be careful to place it across from a page that makes sense… like a third page of an article. It’s pretty bold, and may not sit easily with another overly designed page.

I must say I miss the desaturated approach you had used for your feature article. Sorry… I don’t mean to give you mixed messages… but are you sure you want this to be full color? Maybe a compromise is something to consider? Would you consider using a blue duotone for the image, and then use that same blue to replace the black in the background of page 1? Rather than dull the photo, it would replace the 4 colors with only 2 (blue and black). Try it and see if you can recapture the concept of something “missing” that you had with the black/gray layout.

Is the title word “Hunger” meant to be crooked on the page? It isn’t tilted enough for us to see it as a design choice… instead it looks a bit like a mistake. Be bolderor don’t do it.

    Don’t forget page folios.

  3. Hey Dan,

First, your infographic is awesome. Very attention-grabbing and modern. Just be careful; there's a typo in "hamburger."

For the spread, I agree with Coni. I was going to suggest using a muted blue in the background of the text rather than the black-brown used. And if you add a blue duotone over the image the two pages would have more consistency with each other. But, I think this layout works so much better than the previous version; it is much more legible for the reader. Nice work!

PS. I still love your little robot icon dude :)
