Nazar TOC and Cover Update

Hi All -
I started my design with the idea that my demographic would likely utilize a mobile device of some kind to view an online version of the magazine. That idea has translated further into a more print to web layout, including my table of contents and my updated cover.

It is structured but its still playful, the typography and iconography come through along with strong imagery to compliment articles.

I'm still not sure about the background being white on the TOC, any suggestions are welcome!

  1. Dan – Whew, no more cut apart faces. Yeah! The cover image sits perfectly, and makes a provocative statement without the overtones of violence. I am curious about 2 things I see happening on this and the ToC. I’m not sure I completely understand the reason for the inclusion of the “p” in reference to the page numbers. We don’t usually see the word “page” at all, especially on the ToC – where we assume any # we see on this page is a page number. So – make sure you have a really great reason for this, or don’t do it… because, it will be commented on and you will be questioned about it.

The other curious thing is the inclusion of blue on the cover – in only 3 small places. Why blue (and not green)? And why in those places, and not in, say, the background behind “The Future of Food” block? You are creating a contrast that emphasizes these tiny elements in relation to the other elements on the page and I’m not convinced that it makes complete sense to call our attention to those areas. However, I AM in favor of another color on the cover besides black and red… so keep thinking about this and you’ll come up with the answer.

TofC – the largest image on this page (and thus the focal point in the composition) is the tomato image. But the overtone of red on the image is reducing the detail and quality of the image. So… and here’s a drastic idea – why not use black in the background? A dark background would allow this image to retain its white background (which would be nice for the image). Note: you don’t need a folio on this page, they start after this page.

  2. Dan,
This has come a long way! Great work!
I was just going to say exactly what Coni said about the blue on the cover. I think green would look very eye catching the blue isn't doing it for me. Or maybe the darker blue from the TOC?? Or even the red from the pepper? too much red maybe? I don't know, worth seeing? Or maybe just red on the words "will change"

I love your TOC. I like the use of squares and expressive type. This speaks very well to your audience. Good job!
