Nazar Ex3 - Originals

As discussed in class today, here are my original covers that I created my rework from.
However, any criticism would be appreciated.
See my previous post for where I'm at now in the process.
Thanks! Dan

  1. Dan – I’m going to confine my thoughts to your cover, since you received general feedback on your brief in class yesterday.

In my opinion, you have chosen the best font for the masthead, out of your Exercise 3 layouts. The slab serif is strong, a bit retro, and can stand up to most uses on the cover. Good… although it actually seems have a bit of a problem on the current cover… disappearing into the photo near the “H”. Something you don’t want to have happen. We can often “finish” a word that we are familiar with… but to ask us to imagine “beginning” a word is not as easy. Read on…

Cover image: As I look back at the earlier layouts I don’t see the same contrast problem with the mastheads on the other 2 layouts because you are using blocks of color behind the masthead rather than a photo. AND in Layout #2 I see an image of a women with bright red lips holding a chilly pepper in her mouth. This is a memorable image, with memorable cropping (cropping out the eyes is intriguing). It might speak more provocatively to your audience then a food pix. However, Layout #2 seems to hold too many separate rectangles – do you need them at the bottom? Could you think about the way the taglines are designed in the other layouts… and do something like that here? How could the issue theme sit in a more integrated way into the composition? I encourage you to revisit and redesign the cover in response to some of these comments.

Looking forward to seeing what you do!
